As with gloves, the clothing for a cyclist provides comfort during a ride. Shorts will provide a chamois which will provide some padding, as well as absorbing perspiration. Jerseys will pull perspiration from the body, which will allow the jersey to dry faster. There is nothing worse than an old cotton T-shirt, which is like riding in a wet sponge.
Now depending on the bicycle you purchase, and therefor the type of riding you will be doing, you may or may not need cycling shoes. Cycling shoes not only provide more ventilation than your basic shoe, they provide much needed arch support with a stiffer sole in the shoe.
