One size does not fit all. Now, depending on the style of bike you are going to purchase, this can have an effect the importance of the size of the bike you need. The simple statement of saying you need a certain amount of room while standing over the bike really doesn't apply and really never did. After all you don't ride a bike while standing over it, do you?
Today with bike frames that have sloping top tubes, that increase stand over height, and bikes that have full suspension that decrease stand over height, the focus is more concentrated on top tube length. And of, course, being individual beings ourselves, we do not come in one size fits all either.
True fit for a rider on a bicycle is of more importance for the racer or enthusiast rider than the recreational rider. There are calculated measurements to fit a rider to their bicycle for optimum performance, such as proper foot placement over the pedals, proper knee position over the pedals, proper leg extension, stem length, saddle position and so on. A true fitting to a bicycle is something that needs to be done by a professional bike fitter and will take about an hour. So now we have, getting the proper size bike for the rider and potentially getting the rider fit on the bike.
Now in most circumstances it will be an obvious choice of what size bicycle you will need for your style of riding. And, in most circumstances you will not need a true professional bicycle fitting, which are for those truly crazy 100 mile road racers types or those nutty mountain bike racers.
In any case, we here at Menifee Bicycles will be able to provide you with the experience and expertise to put you on the proper sized bicycle.
Enjoy the Ride!
